Leith Ross
Leith Ross started making music as a way to digest their own life. They know the power of music as a force for good: “I was sitting in my basement bedroom, thinking about a girl that I had a crush on, feeling alone and scared and ashamed of myself. Then a song came on about two girls in love. I was so thrilled.”
Hoping to give that gift to someone else, Ross penned an incredibly honest and intimate collection of songs inspired by artists including Feist and Phoebe Bridgers. Originally from a small town near Ottawa, Ross, the 21 year old Humber College graduate, collaborated with some fellow students to record the debut EP, Motherwell. The eight song collection was recorded live-off-the floor in a single afternoon - what you hear is what you get.
The debut EP Motherwell comes out this summer on Joey Landreth’s record label, Birthday Cake, which Landreth co-owns with his brother and manager. Landreth, an acclaimed musician celebrated for both his solo work and as the front-person for JUNO Award winning outfit The Bros. Landreth, was on Leith Ross' list of dream collaborators. The two were introduced by a mutual friend, and Ross played Landreth a new recording. "As soon as Leith started singing I was moved to tears” Landreth says. "There is an incredible honesty in their singing and writing that I find so refreshing. To listen to Leith’s music is like being a fly on the wall in their head and heart. You get a vivid picture of who they are and what they’re about.”
The powerful lead single entitled "Everyone I’ve Never Met” came out August 7, 2020. The song was written by Ross after spending hours watching TV on a laptop. The sun came shining through the window to remind Leith that a whole day had been stolen by a screen: "I've always been someone who would strike up a conversation with a stranger on the street car on the way home from buying groceries. Around that time, I hadn't even been leaving the house to get groceries, they got delivered right to my door. This song mourns the moments in my future where I will inevitably choose the ease offered to me over the moment of anxiety that leads to something precious."
Leith Ross est une artiste compositrice-interprète de Toronto qui s’est lancé dans le monde de la musique, dans le but de partager des parcelles de sa vie et ses différents défis quotidiens! « J'étais assis dans ma chambre au sous-sol, pensant à une fille pour qui j'avais le béguin, me sentant seule et effrayée. Puis une chanson en lien avec deux filles amoureuses s’est mise à jouer sur la radio. Ce fût comme une sorte d’émerveillement. Cela a été un moment révélateur, dans ma carrière », a lancé Ross. Cette dernière a donc créé par la suite une collection de pièces intimes inspirées par des artistes tels que Feist et Phoebe Bridgers. Originaire d'une petite ville située tout près d'Ottawa, Ross, 21 ans diplômé du Humber College, a collaboré avec des collègues de classe pour enregistrer son premier EP intitulé Motherwell. Cette collection de huit chansons a été enregistrée en live off-the-floor, en un seul après-midi et sera lancé cet été, sur le label de Joey Landreth nommée Birthday Cake. Ce dernier est d’ailleurs un musicien respecté de l’industrie musicale, autant pour ses compositions solos que pour son travail au sein du groupe récompensé aux Prix Juno, The Bros.
Depuis longtemps, Leith Ross souhaitait collaborer avec Joey Landreth. Les deux ont d’ailleurs été présentés par un ami commun. « Dès que Leith a commencé à chanter, j'ai été ému aux larmes », a mentionné Landreth. « Il y a une certaine fragilité, dans son chant et dans son écriture », a-t-il ajouté.
Le puissant single intitulé « Everyone I've Never Met » est sorti le 7 août 2020 et a été écrit par Ross qui venait tout juste de passer des heures à regarder la télévision sur un ordinateur portable. Le soleil qui brillait par sa fenêtre lui rappelé qu'une journée entière avait été volée par un écran et c’est ce qui a inspiré cette pièce : « J'ai toujours entamé des discussions avec des inconnus dans le métro, après avoir fait ses courses. Cette journée-là, lorsque j’ai écrit mon premier single, je n'avais même pas quitté la maison pour quoique ce soit. Mes courses avaient d’ailleurs été livrées à ma porte. Cette chanson pleure donc les moments où je choisirai forcément la facilité au lieu de l'anxiété qui mène à des moments si précieux », a précisé Leith Ross.
