Natalie Dávila is the Marketing Manager for Polyvinyl Record Co., where she works with a roster of over 40 artists including of Montreal, Alvvays, Xiu Xiu, Pedro the Lion, and Jay Som, specializing in tour promotion & digital outlets, such as YouTube. Prior to moving to the label side she was the Programming Director for 35 Denton Music Festival in Texas and a Booking Coordinator at Paradigm Talent Agency fka The Windish Agency in Chicago.

What do you look for in an artist you want to work with?

I connect with artists the same way I connect with anyone else, which I think ultimately boils down to wanting to know people’s story, their background, etc. It’s the Anthropology degree in me. There’s that great line – “we are the sum total of all our experiences” – and I believe that obviously applies to artists and the music they make. When we first signed Shy Boys they sent us a Google doc (unprompted) that lovingly became known as “the manifesto.” It was essentially a breakdown of each song on their album and the story behind it. I bawled my eyes out on the plane home from SXSW reading through it. It immediately endeared me to the band because I felt like I was being let in on a secret, getting to know these sweet & personal details that informed this very special thing that they created together. That sort of vulnerability is powerful and incredibly moving. And, to me, music is just about the most intimate medium out there, so an artist that can effectively communicate in that way is forever magical to me. It alludes to a great depth of emotion, and I am all about those feels.

What was your first job in the music industry?

My first fully paid gig was my fresh out-of-college job as the Programming Director for 35 Denton Music Festival in North Texas. I, along with our booking team, curated a unique four-day musical experience across two outdoor stages & ten venues, featuring over 200 performers, including Solange, Bun B, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Big Boi, Sleep, Mac DeMarco, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown, Best Coast, Built to Spill, The Mountain Goats, Reggie Watts, Ty Segall, Roky Erickson, The Raincoats, Reigning Sound, etc.

What was the worst (or funniest) pitch you have ever received?

The best one I’ve ever seen was mailed to us here at PV HQ and now lives front and center on our office fridge. I smile at it every time I refill my water bottle. I don’t wanna share too much and out the band, but a few select details will give you the gist: first, the whole pitch is in all caps with no punctuation, just short one-liners connected by plus signs that, you guessed it, equal the band name. Some of the lines include “MIDDLE AGED + PROUD OF IT” and “ALTERNATIVE HIP HOP IE FRANK ZAPPA BUT WITH MORE COHESIVENESS”. So, yeah, it’s amazing!

Favourite non-music-related pastime?

Both of these are related to growing up in my beloved Houston – going to Astros games at the Astrodome with my Dad & my brother, and watching the Rockets win back to back titles in the mid-90’s with my Grandma (an NBA superfan ← where I got it from).

Who are your musical heroes?

DJ Screw, Arthur Russell, The Raincoats. Each totally unique in their own right (genre), but they all brought something to music that hadn’t existed prior. They are all true blue innovators that laid the foundation for so much of what we are witnessing in the current musical landscape.

What artists are you excited about for 2019?

2019 will be the year of Julia Jacklin if I have anything to say about it. Her sophomore album, Crushing, arrives in full February 22nd. It’s one of the most moving records I’ve ever listened to. Her voice has that indefinable quality that just aches with the truth. It’s painful and beautiful in the same way the word ‘crushing’ itself has a dual meaning.

What is one thing you always pack when you go to a music festival?

Portable battery charger for my iPhone — crucial! Chapstick would be a very close #2.

Qu’est-ce que vous recherchez dans un artiste avec qui vous aimerez/voulez travailler?

Je crée les connexions avec les artistes tout comme je crée les connexions avec n’importe qui, ce qui est essentiellement vouloir apprendre les histoires des gens, leurs origines, etc. C’est mon diplôme en anthropologie. Il y une parole magnifique – « nous sommes la somme totale de toutes nos expériences » - et je crois qu’évidemment ceci applique aux artistes et la musique qu’ils créent.

Tout après qu’on a signé Shy Boys ils nous a envoyé un Google Doc (spontanément) que nous appelons maintenant, avec amour, « le manifesto. » C’était essentiellement une description de chaque chanson de leur album et l’histoire du chanson. J’ai tellement pleuré dans l’avion après SXSW en le lisant. Je ressentais immédiatement affiliée au groupe parce que j’avais l’impression qu’ils partageaient un secret avec moi, racontant les détails doux et personnelles qui ont mené à la création de cette chose très spéciale.

Ce type de vulnérabilité est puissant et émouvant. Et, à moi, la musique est à peu près le médium le plus intime, alors les artistes qui peuvent communiquer de façon efficace de cette manière sont magiques pour moi.  C’est une indication d’une profondeur d’émotion, et j’aime bien ça.

Quel était votre premier emploi dans l’industrie de musique?

Mon premier job complètement professionnel était mon emploi directement après le collège comme Directeur de Programmation pour 35 Denton Music Festival dans le nord du Texas. Avec l’équipe de réservations, j’ai organisé une expérience musicale unique sur deux scènes extérieures et dix salles, mettant en vedette plus que 200 artistes y inclus Solange, Bun B, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Big Boi, Sleep, Mac DeMarco, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown, Best Coast, Built to Spill, The Mountain Goats, Reggie Watts, Ty Segall, Roky Erickson, The Raincoats, Reigning Sound, etc.

Quel était le pitch le pire (ou le plus drôle) que vous avez reçu?

Le plus drôle que j’ai jamais vu a été envoyé à notre bureau ici à PolyVinyl et est placé au plein milieu du frigo du bureau. Il me fait sourire à chaque fois que je remplis ma bouteille d’eau. Je ne veux pas trop partager et exposer le groupe, mais voici quelques détails pour vous donner une impression; premièrement, le pitch était écrit entièrement en lettres majuscules, sans ponctuation, seulement des courtes phrases liées par des symboles d’addition. La somme de l’addition de tous les phrases, comme vous pouvez deviner, était le nom du groupe. Quelques phrases qu’y était inclus :  ‘MOYEN AGE + FIER D’Y ÊTRE’ et ‘HIP HOP ALTERNATIVE P.E. FRANK ZAPPA MAIS AVEC PLUS DE COHÉSION.’ Alors, oui, formidable.

Loisirs préférés non-reliés à la musique?

Les deux loisirs sont reliés à ma jeunesse, ayant grandi à Houston: aller voir les Astros jouer à l’Astrodome avec mon père et mon frère, et voir les victoires des Rockets de deux titres consécutifs pendant les années 90s avec ma grand-mère (un superfan de NBA)

What artists are you excited about for 2019? Quelles artistes êtes-vous pour 2019?

2019 serait l’année de Julia Jacklin, si j’en ai quelque chose à dire. Son deuxième album, Crushing, serait lancé le 22 février. C’est un des disques les plus émouvants que j’en ai jamais entendu. Sa voix possède une qualité qu’on ne peut pas décrire et qui ressenti la douleur de la vérité. C’est douloureux et beau tout comme le mot ‘Crushing’ possède deux définitions.

Nommez un truc que vous apportez toujours avec vous aux festivals de musique?

Chargeur portatif pour mon iPhone – essentiel! Chapstick est une #2 très proche.
